“Beer is daily food” – Brewing beer has a long history in Germany: First brewing beer at home was the women's business such as baking bread. Later monks in the monasteries started semi-professional breweries the 11th century. The “German brewery boom” in the 13th century started in Northern Germany at the Baltic Sea and North Sea coast with the big harbors - much beer was exported to Scandinavia. The variety of the ingredients used back then was huge often resulting in a very bad quality. Since 1516, the German “purity law” dictates that there are only four ingredients which are allowed to be used in order to call the brew “beer”: water, barley, hops and yeast. How to brew the great German beers is now a well hidden secret of the brew masters. Recipes have been passed along for generations in family-run microbreweries. New technologies have been implemented to take German beer brewing to a modern industrial level, still preserving the high quality.
On a custom “Cultural German Beer Tour” you will see the whole spectrum from historic family-run microbreweries to some of the most modern German breweries, not to forget the culture and social life in the world-famous beer gardens in summer season. The variety of local beer specialties is as diversified as Germany’s regions – North and South.
